LUMHC 2nd XI vs Edge Hill 1st XI
13/02/2019
A group of 13 of LUMHC’s finest, and Chags, travelled to the metropolis that is Ormskirk to play the only undefeated team in Northern 3A. Troubles were faced before the boys even stepped onto the pitch with Anders having forgotten his shirt and shoes. He ended up having to borrow a pair from the Edge Hill goalie.
The first half started well for Lancaster with a decent amount of possession. However, this resulted in no real chances aside from a few touches in the opposition’s D. For the most part, this was the same for Edge Hill although as the half progressed, they started getting more and more dangerous around the Lancaster D. Out of nowhere, quick movement from Edge Hill down their right resulted in a one-on-one with Porter with the Edge Hill player sending the ball into the back of the net with a reverse hit. It was clearly Wrong’s fault for being really slow, but to shift blame, he claimed it was the press’ fault, which it was not. When Lancaster did have possession, it was mainly between Stotty and Egg as they passed the ball around the back but could not send the ball higher up due to midfielders not being in enough space to safely receive the ball. This resulted in Egg running up from the back and smashing it forwards. Towards the end of the second half, Edge Hill scored a near identical goal to their first. Clearly Wrong needed to reflect on how to appropriately use his legs to keep up with his man.
Following a tactical rundown of the midfield by Tom Fay, the 2s went in to the second half knowing that a win was still within reach. Compared to a first half where the action mainly occurred in a congested midfield, the play opened up with long passes and runs made down the sides, but Wrong generally managed to stay on his man. Well done, Wrong. Edge Hill earned their first short corner of the match, but their drag flicker at top D was ran down by Anders. Following this short was a period in which Edge Hill won a series of short and long corners but these came to nought due to Anders continuing pressure of Edge Hill’s drag flicker during the shorts, and tight marking by Lancaster during the longs. There was a brief respite as Porter’s goalie shoe or whatever it is called ripped and needed taping up. Tom’s midfield instructions clearly had an effect as Lancaster’s centre received the ball more and worked it further up the pitch, although generally nothing dangerous arose. A rare Lancaster opportunity ended with Aaron missing the ball trying to cross it into the D. The press generally worked well with Edge Hill’s back line being pressured by Ryan, Aaron, Jaimie and Bukete. Notable occurrences in the latter stages of the second half include Egg leaping to clear the ball, stopping an Edge Hill attack; Ander’s opposing man expressing his anger at the Norwegian running him down, fearing he would increase Anders’ tally to 78; one of the umpires getting venting his frustration at people questioning his decisions; and a Lancaster short corner (!!!). Notable occurrences in the latter stages of the match report include the use of semicolons (;;;). Unfortunately, this short corner came to nothing and the game came to an end shortly after, with Edge Hill winning 2-0.
Although a defeat, there was good hockey from the 2nd XI in the match as they generally went toe to toe with Edge Hill (although in Wrong’s case, the toes were sometimes fifteen metres apart). Next match: Liverpool 2nd team at home.
Man of the Match: Anders for denying Edge Hill’s drag flicker.
Dick of the Day: Anders for forgetting half his kit.
Match report: Anders
