Here at LUHC there's nothing we like more than new members, and in order to ensure players of all abilities can take part and give hockey a go, we set up our mixed dev squad to teach beginners how to play the beautiful game
Whereas in previous years the development squad has been relatively small and some members have felt separate from the club due to the different training days. As has been the aim in the 2019/20 season, we will be ensuring that the squad gains its well deserved place as an integral part of the hockey club, with well prepared training plans and the chance for some of the more advanced members of the squad to take part in the 3rd XI training from time to time, so that people have the opportunity to begin playing competitively if they would like. There is nothing to stop you from working your way up through the club.
Just as it is possible to begin playing competitively from the development squad, there is also room for those who want to play more casually and just try something for fun. If there are enough numbers of people with either aim, then the plan is to have two groups focusing on either competitive or casual sport, so we can get as many people involved as we can
The development squad are able to take part in all social activities from Wednesdays and Saturdays to EOSD, and we will be making an extra effort to ensure all members feel welcome to attend these.
The development squad train twice a week, on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and whilst there are no regular competitive fixtures (due to a lack of development squads at other universities), providing that the York dev squad have enough players, there will be the critically acclaimed dev squad roses game to show off your skills to the rest of the club, and we will be looking into getting fixtures with local clubs to enhance the dev squads opportunities
