Roses 2016 3rd XI
Match Report

LUMHC 0-6 UYHC
By Bellend

The 3s or ‘The Pride’ enjoyed a successful season in their respective BUCS league remaining unbeaten for over 4 months and finishing in 2nd position, up from 4th the season prior, leading to the players entering Roses optimistic of bettering last season’s 1-0 loss at York. As the players arrived at the Astros that morning, conditions began to take a turn for the worse with the wind picking up and the rain beginning to pour from the clouds, setting the scene for what was too come.

The team began the game slowly, seemingly unable to deal with York’s half pitch press and pace on the break, and some sloppy defending and lack of concentration saw the hosts concede 2 within the first 10 minutes. Surprisingly, this seemed to wake the team up as captain Connor Morrison (Bell) and the midfield duo of Jack Croft (Kerncroft 4000006) and Johnny Bardrick (Bambi) steadied the midfield with some determined play. This led to a first period of sustained pressure around the York D, but Bell fizzed the ball narrowly wide from a tight angle. York remained dangerous in attack and with 10 minutes remaining of the first half forced a short in the D which they converted, only for it to be disallowed (God knows why), a lucky escape for the lads.

The final 10 minutes of the half saw somewhat scrappy play from both sides, with LUMHC’s overly aggressive approach seeing Daniel Milverton (Alvin), Jake Rogers (Jolly) and Bell all warned by the umpires for aggressive tackles, yet surprisingly no cards where shown. With 2 minutes remaining York picked a lazy hit-out and converted to make it 3-0 going into the break. All in all the 3’s simply did not manage to get going in the first period with only some fleeting glimpses of the slick counter-attacking play they built their season on thus far.
Some stern half time words certainly helped to spice up the beginning to the second half with LUMHC flying out of the traps and beginning to see more of the ball in midfield. Despite this new found resurgence, York’s clinical forward (who was clearly above 3s standard) slotted past Robbie Kaiser (Kaiser) twice in quick succession, ultimately leaving the lads with no way back into a game that they didn’t really find their feet in. A fleeting highlight from LUMHC’s perspective was Richard Clarke (Sticky Dicky) cannoning the ball into the York women’s supporters, and a John Terry-esque sliding tackle by Jolly to protect the 3s from another certain goal.

Having come up against a well-drilled York team who were vigilant and careful on the ball the 3s can have little debate over the result of the game. Perhaps the most disappointing aspect from our perspective is that we never found our feet in the game and simply allowed York to impose their style of play on us, which would never end in our favour.
