Bangor 1s 04/12/2019

Big comeback from the boys in sunny Wales

The 2nd XI returned to BUCS following LUMHC’s brief ‘hiatus’ with an international away day to sunny Bangor. Having taken hits from the black death emanating from The Sir Richard Owen, the 2s travelled with a reduced number of 13 including Berto for his 2s debut. Further issues were had down the road as Nelson took the bus driver down the wrong road, but this meant the driver could show off a huge 3-point turn halfway up a hill. Having been beaten 6-2 the last time they travelled to Bangor; a result today would mean big things for the 2s as they currently sat on an impressive -3 points in BUCS Hockey Men’s North Division 3a (@LUSU).

The match started well for Lancaster as they maintained pressure in Bangor’s half due to quick passing and tackling, and the fact that Bangor’s centre back tried and failed to aerial on multiple occasions. Due to Chips and Jamie vomiting out their intestines back in Lancaster, Crash found himself upfront and made the most of it, running rings around the Welsh defenders. ‘I only got tackled fairly once in their 25’ he claimed, after the game. Quick passing down the sides to Ben and Baguetti meant the 2s were constantly in reach of opening the scoring.  This good start resulted in a series of Lancaster shorts, one of which was converted by Crash in what was definitely the correct way to go about the number 4 short corner routine.

Following this goal, Bangor gained the upper hand, making quick runs and passes through the centre. For a while Lancaster absorbed the pressure. Despite this match being only the second with the new press applied, it worked well for the most part. Bangor’s press was basically non-existent, and this allowed Anders and Jordan (Pubes) to hit it straight the middle to all areas of the pitch without much issue. However, Bangor for the end of the second half set up outside Lancaster’s D, winning a series of shorts themselves. These were dealt with from Lancaster until one was (dubiously) hit in from the side, James having to duck out the way to avoid getting hit in the face. Tonsils protested vigorously, the umpires debated it, but the goal stood. Following on from this, Bangor scored a less contentious goal, leaving the score at 2-1 to the foreigners at half time.

The second half was for the most part characterised by Bangor containing the ball in Lancaster’s half and Lancaster desperation in defence. Sam played the worst pass all year, straight off the back of the pitch from a sideline ball under zero pressure.  Some of Bangor’s players clearly had some skill and so shutting them down took some hard work, but the score remained the same. Chags got hit in the chin and had to go off to get assessed, but still had a lovely chat with the Saint John’s Ambulance lady, who was impressed we had a first aid kit. Anders got a green card for going in hard on one of Bangor’s players, and in the confusion of a centre back being off the pitch, Bangor scored their third goal after Pubes passed it straight to their centre forward from the 16. Baguetti then found himself on a green for not knowing how long five yards is and trying to kick an opponent’s stick. Very silly.

With five minutes to go, and the score remaining the same, Lancaster started to make concrete moves into Bangor’s half. This pressure was eventually rewarded in Ben slotting the ball past the keeper after some nice passing from midfield to the forwards. In the dying moments of the game, Bangor’s centre back tried a new approach at the aerial as he twatted the ball near Sam’s head. Surprisingly, this was the first aerial managed to get a touch to, but it was rightfully brought back for a Lancaster ball just outside of the Bangor D for a Lancaster ball. Crash took it quickly, and after some stuff that happened in the D (I play in defence, I couldn’t see what went down), Baguetti smashed the ball into the roof of the net in the last play of the game, leaving the score at 3-3, and the 2s on a massive -2 points (@LUSU).

Man of the Match: Ben for some good runs down the sides and scoring his first goal for LUMHC
Dick of the Day: Pubes for setting up Bangor’s centre forward beautifully and committing crimes against clothing later on.
