The 2s return to positive points with a fine win over Bangor
LUMHC 2nd XI vs Bangor University 1st XI 22/01/2020
The 2s returned to Wednesday afternoon hockey playing at home to Bangor. The 2s were hoping to improve upon the 3-3 draw that occurred in the away fixture and once again reach positive points in the league. There were ominous signs to begin with: fog reduced the visibility to that of flat 2, 5 Queen Street’s single glazing windows that attract all the condensation in Lancaster, Bangor actually managed to turn up with a full XI, DMac was umpiring, and Baguetti was leading the warm-up. Following a ten-minute team talk from captain Nelson, the match was underway.
The opening minutes were defined by Lancaster possession, although Anders tried his best to give Bangor the ball by slapping it through the middle 24/7, but it still managed to always reach a Lancaster stick. Bangor’s centre back had also not learned how to distribute from the back or chuck an aerial and so bangor’s 16s were generally received by a Lancaster stick, maybe due an insane (classified) press. Further, their backline was still in full Christmas mode, showing off their stout physical presence and immaculate stamina. Birthday boy Jordan took the phrase ‘first five minutes, let them know you’re there’ by bodying two Bangor players in quick succession, but as a birthday treat DMac did not show him a card. The continued Lancaster pressure resulted in a short, which was put away by Jordan running to the back post. 1-0 to Lancaster. The pressure did not stop, and secured Lancaster’s second goal of the game, pushing it past the keeper who just loved to slide into any man with the ball in the D. Overall the attack showed some well concerted actions however the ratio of “Oh, that was nice” actions to “Oh, what was that?” actions was a little too tilted to the wrong side.
The passing was generally good, but there were moments when it became sloppy, with not enough transfers round the back going on, and more biffs through the centre, which Bangor realised they could actually stop. Stotty chucked some big aerials and made some big runs from the back but this did not really achieve anything as he would get tackled somewhere down the pitch and fail to track back. Bangor, having more possession in Lancaster’s half eventually managed to work the ball to their centre forward who managed to pace Harrison ’99 Pace’ Stott, who pulled back on his opposing man to slow him down as he ran into the D. No foul was given until it hit Anders’ foot in the D. This was Bangor’s first real opportunity of the game and they made the most of it, scoring from a slap hit across the D which managed to elude Sam on right post. ‘It went right under him’ Paddy was heard saying after the goal. Although Lancaster’s mentality became a lot more erratic as the half ended, Bangor could not secure more goals mainly due to Tonsils’ prowess in the 1v1 in goal.
During the break, Nick Davey, the Napoleon of the hockey world, altered Lancaster’s press (classified). The result was that during the second half Lancaster dominated possession, passing the ball fluidly round the back and finding men wide on the left and right to camp in Bangor’s half. Bangor continued to launch it from their 16s, trying to get their more skilled players on the ball, but this was generally once again dealt with by the Lancaster press. Bangor could only look on in amazement as the 2s passed it round them, with one of them commenting on Baguetti saying ‘he is fast’ (he isn’t wrong). As Bangor’s defence got stretched from side to side, Jamie found Asse top D, unmarked and with an open goal infront of him. Unfortunately, Lancaster’s newest international transfer whiffed his shot, his stick just tapping the top of the ball. Rumour has it he later did not miss the bin at the social. So overall – solid transfer. The continued pressure however did yield Ben his second goal, who once again pushed the ball passed Bangor’s keeper to find the back of the net, yielding his third goal against Bangor. The Welshmen were so impressed that they called a time-out to ask DMac how we were not top of the league. DMac, being the man of repute that he is, refused to step into the world of slander and did not mention where our -6 points had come from. What a man.
Although Lancaster dominated possession, Bangor could still look dangerous on the break, although Anders managed to sweep up most of their long balls. Unfortunately, Jordan gave away a silly short by not getting five, and although Anders physically dealt with the drag flicker, it did hit his back stick and Bangor put away their second short of the game to reduce the lead to one goal. Tonsils made it clear that he wanted everyone to know that the ball went straight through his legs. The legend of James Porter lives on. The 2s continued to dominate possession and from this made it into Bangor’s D. There were changes of possession in the D and some fouls (first one was from Bangor) but in the end Baguetti sealed the deal with a goal, resulting in the final score being 4-2 to Lancaster. Being the sportsman that he is, Bangor’s centre forward congratulated DMac and Genga on their umpiring, without a hint of bitterness.
Man of the Match: Anders for covering the defensive line with expertise
DMac's unnoficial Lancaster and Morecambe Hockey Club Member of the Match - Anders
Dick of the Day: Asse for missing an open goal.
