3rd XI vs Bangor 2nd XI 19/02/2020

The Pride get promoted with a strong win

The last league game of the season for the mighty pride

The final game of the season was upon us, leaving us all wondering where all our matches had gone, the season seeming to end too soon. It was a very wet afternoon in glorious Lancaster; however, the boys were all singing off the same hymn sheet before the match. (Mainly “why is it so wet”, “why did we choose Lancaster”, “why is it so damn cold”.) The cheeky 1s were hogging the pitch so the mighty pride were forced to warm up in the cricket nets. By this point it was bloody freezing, the warmup being done in as many layers as possible to avoid frostbite. Before the match started we had time for Joe to give us a classic statement, asking if the starting 11 included the keeper or not. Classic Joe (the answer is obviously no for all you fools out there.)

It turned out that some of Bangor’s squad were too nervous to come and face the mighty Pride, with only nine players managing to break away from their sheep for the long trek to Lancaster. The match started slow, with many people still not fully defrosted, and the Bangor players passing to thin air in a desperate attempt to try and out manoeuvre the press that was suffocating them. Also Dave missed from about five yards out… twice. Classic Dave.

There was however time for some shithousery, as a rare Bangor attack led to Lucas trying to clear the ball of the side- line, however it went flying off the back line. Genga, who’s vision was massively impaired by the rain clogging his glasses, gave a short. Poor. The following short went straight through the man on the post, and Alex was frozen in a block due to the weather, and so was unable to move. 1-0 to Bangor, not the best start considering they only had nine. This however spiked the mighty pride into action, with some subs coming on and maintaining the intensity. Soon Hamlyn put the ball past the keeper, however he forgot that the ball had to cross the line, luckily Alex was there to sweep the ball in from the big distance of about three inches. 1-1

Not much happened after this until half time. At half time stand in captain Will reminded us of how crap we were being, and one armed captain Matt was there to offer moral support. Onto the second half.

The second half started slow, until Cam decided he should play up front. This led to an immediate impact, scoring from something. 2-1 the Pride. About minutes after this a ball was sent across the D, and Alex swept the ball into its rightful place in the bottom corner. 3-1 the Pride. After this Dave embarked on some reverse shanagans, and the ball once again ended up in the back of the net. 4-1 the pride. The game, and with it the pride’s season, was quickly drawing to a close. However there was plenty of action left. As the superior fitness and numbers of the pride started to really benefit, and Cam once again stepped up and put the ball away. 5-1. After this there was a moment of confusion, with the ball coming off Jack Tracey’s stick and into the goal. Genga eventually gave it with much confusion, with no one, including Tracey, having any idea how this happened. 6-1. Just before the end a slick short corner routine led to Hamlyn sweeping the ball into the goal, 7-1. With that the game concluded, and with it the BUCS season for the pride. Depending on the mighty SU we might be able to get promotion, fingers crossed for that. Until then we look forward to battering York at Roses.

MotM: Hamlyn for some strong midfield work

DotD: Alex for overstepping on a short corner :/
