vs Liverpool 2s 30/10/2019

(sA disappointing result for the 2s first away day

The day started off cold, damp and overcast. At this point, GCSE English teacher at this point would have mentioned the words ‘pathetic fallacy’ in relation to the 70 minutes that were about to occur in Liverpool. There was not much to say for the first five minutes of the match with Lancaster’s back four of Stotty, Jordan, Sam and Anders passing it around the back, not being able to find a ball to their midfield as Liverpool set their press solidly. It became apparent that Liverpool were collapsing onto Lancaster’s left-back once he got the ball, but generally Sam was able to ward off this pressure and continue the passing of the ball round the back. Liverpool did get the first opportunity of the match as a pass through the middle was intercepted, but fortunately this chance came to nothing as a strong reverse shot was saved by Oskar (Tonsils), for a long.

Lancaster did get some opportunities once passes were found into the middle of the pitch. Chances mainly arose from quick passes to the forwards but these came to nothing. The half was defined by Liverpool keeping Lancaster in their half.  This resulted in a series of Liverpool shorts, which initially were kept out, even when Nelson went rogue and knocked Anders off the goal line before the short took place, and Lancaster defending with only one man on post due to a shortage of masks. However, having no one on left post eventually led to a Liverpool opening the scoring, their big lad up top (coming from centre back) finding the bottom-left corner from a short. Liverpool maintained pressure in the first half but were kept out by solid defending and an instance of physicality as Anders dived into Liverpool’s forward who was one-on-one with Tonsils in goal. One of Liverpool’s umpires, clearly trying to undo her mistake of giving a Liverpool short for claiming the ball hit Anders’ arm (it clearly hit his finger, he felt it), decided to be sporting and let Lancaster have the ball for some reason. The second half then ended as a Liverpool forward managed to receive the ball in space in the d and slot it past Tonsils.

It was not an ideal to be 0-2 after 35 minutes, and the 2s fell down to an even worse position as three quick goals from Liverpool in the first five minutes of the second half, their midfielders and forwards quickly outnumbering Lancaster in the box to pass it round Tonsils, sending the score to 0-5. This half was far scrappier than the first, with a lot more stick tackles being used to break down attacks as Lancaster finally managed to work their way up. Good fitness from Lancaster resulted in them making deeper attacks into Liverpool’s half, with runs from Crash, Stotty, Chags (he just wanted it more) and Jamie, and excellent reading of the game from Anders to pick up long passes, resulted in more and more fouls from Liverpool to keep Lancaster out.

Unfortunately, Liverpool kept scoring, winning shorts and their drag-flicker/guy-who-generally-just-twatted-the-ball finding the backboard again again, and also just did some nice stuff in the d to set the score to 0-7. One instance Sam watched the ball roll over the line before hitting it out. Unlucky mate, happens to the best of us. This was far from ideal, and Liverpool kept attacking but solid defence from Jordan kept the score the same until Anders decided to pass the ball to Liverpool’s centre-forward who increased their lead to 8. The game got even more scrappy in the final ten, with Liverpool’s stick tackling not really being punished. However, Jaime who had bene making the runs and scraping his knuckles along the sand-based finally was set free in the d, slotting it home for the consolation goal. Lancaster actually had some pressure towards the end, keeping it in Liverpool’s quarter, but this came to nothing, and the game ended 8-1 to Liverpool.

Not an ideal game for the 2s, with basics being found lacking against a strong opposition. However there were good points, with the press keeping Liverpool’s back from finding passes down the middle, or causing them to resort to aerials to find their men.
Liverpool can be seen as a nice city, buildings that are modern and spacey, one of my personal favourites being the beauty that is Anfield. However I would not reccomend visiting the sandpaper that they call a pitch. It was Liverpool's trump card and it helped them in their beating of the Lancaster side. I cannot wait for Liverpool to travel to the bastion of Lancaster and experience what a top quality pitch is.

Another reason why not to go to Liverpool is because the pitch may be haunted, because a bit of Lancaster 2s died on that pitch. However just like a phoenix I am sure that the 2s will be reborn and give Liverpool a hiding when they travel north. Commenting on the performance supplied by the 2s is that there is room for improvement, there were bright patches in the performance tonsils made some beautiful saves under pressure. I might be a bit optimistic in saying this but if the match had gone on for a few more minutes a comeback may have been on. The fitness levels of Lancaster were quite frankly superior to that of Liverpool's. With 15 minutes to go Lancaster were 8 down with no response. This was where Luke stepped up to the plate and played a through ball to the unforgiving beast that is Jamie. A few silky skills later and the ball was in the back of the scousers goal. This was where Lancaster began to shine. The Liverpudlians were on the run as witnessed by there lack of goals in the final 15. Some might say they were on the ropes.

The grit of the Lancaster team in those few last graceful moments was only matched by the sand on the pitch, if the team played like that throughout the whole game then the scoreline would have been very different. The team also battled through some quite dreadful 'banter' from the crowd, which was to be truthful uninventive. A notable mention has to be when Anders decided to become a hurdle, or when baghuetti thought it was a good idea to jog across the pitch when delivering the masks and throw them away from the goal. Hopefully this has been an inciteful report but also motivational, since I am quite positive in the fact that when we come into contact with Liverpool again the score will be quite different.

Man of the Match: Jorda for some solid work in defence
Dick of the Day: Jordan for his poor taste in clothing (see attached photo)
